Brass Basah: 8-Man Band Photoshoot

Brass Basah: The main person I was liaising with was Hafiz, the drummer (we know each other from our NYP days). Ska music, to me, is vibrant and energetic so I initially only wanted to do something loud but I also wanted something a bit more down to earth and laid back without being too minimalistic, in case the number of people might be too overwhelming. We decided to do both themes.

I chose to shoot at Bras Basah since it’s where the band’s name was derived from.

I also hold this place close to heart ‘cause I went there a lot, especially in my younger days (shut up). I always loved the aesthetics and colour palette of the space, which suits a more muted and earthy theme. Plus, the textures and grittiness of the venue added impactful depth.

We went to the watermelon playground

after to do some fun shots.

For this, I wanted the loudness I talked about with a touch of vintage colours. This was fully experimental for me since I don’t normally go extreme or too complex with the colour grading. I’m actually still in the midst of editing some of them, just trying to get the colours right.

I think this was the challenging part of the day for me because 1. I hadn’t seen the space yet and 2. The group shots didn’t feel satisfactory with all the HDB around in my opinion but I’m glad to have tried and tested. I wouldn’t mind exploring this style again for sure.

Ended the long day at a studio…

…just to take some shots at a controlled environment (and enjoy the aircon). The equipment available was quite lacking so I didn’t get to play around with lights as much as I intended too but all’s good.

All in all, I did try out what I wanted to and provided different types of styles that they can use for various types of scenarios and marketing needs. It was also so easy to work with them because they were all very cooperative and trusted the process— thanks boys!
